Blenny Question

I'm thinking about adding some fish to my aquariums. Most of my coral species are atlantic, a few are pacific. Can anyone tell me some facts about blennies? (more specifically red lip blenny) I'm basically looking for grazing fish that wont munch on my coral but rather enjoy feasting on some filamentous algae.

Ooooh. Don't know too much about red lips, but the lawnmower blenny could be pretty fun for the antics.

I have had very good luck with lawnmower blennies, and a redlip blenny too, as good reef citizens that did not munch corals. One of my lawnmowers did refuse to eat (anything) eventually starving himself. I have occasionally heard of others who have similar experiences so if you go the lawnmower route it would be a good idea to have the fish store feed him before you take him home. (really a good idea with any fish)

I currently have a Bicolor blenny, and he really is the cutest thing with THE MOST personality. He is so much fun! But, the little bastid does love to harass my corals if I try to place any in his "hang out" zones. So I have one section of my tank that is bare, because he bites any corals I put there. Sometimes we pester him by putting rock rubble in his spot and he proceeds to attack it until it falls away.

I love my Red-lip,,,, always out-and-about and kinda looks like muddy mudskipper. It's a combtooth so no problems with it nipping at corals etc. Mine will eat Nori if I put some in the tank but is also quite happy eating flake.

My redlip does not get along with my skunk clowns for some reason,,,, he seems to go out of his way to annoy them and will happily take all 4 of them on at once.

I have had both bi-color and red lip blennies. They are both great fish. I have had them "scrape" my corals before. I think this bothered me more than the coral though. The Black Sailfin Blenny is a better algae eater than either of these other two. IMO. They are also very reef safe and have alot of personality. Andy

Blennies are my favorite fish (got an Enchelyurus flavipes and a canary blenny in my tank now). Sounds like everyone here has had good experiences with their red lip blennies, but I've read many posts on other discussion boards about territorial red lips that harassed tank mates. Lawnmowers and black sailfin blennies are less likely to harass tankmates (though they generally will not tolerate other blennies).

I was mainly conserned with whether or not they'd munch on my corals. My tanks are for research purposes, so if I had coral being munched on, that would be bad.

bicolr's are great. mine's got tons of personality and has a few favorite hang-outs in the tank.
