'Got a Hammer, and it's doing quite well, from what I can tell. 'Extends out like crazy, and it's begining to start little "shoots"(for lack of a better word), off the main trunk, and now they have little hammers.

Question: Recently, there's been a large bubble at the mouth of one of the trunks (they are all connected at the base). This occurs early in the morning, and by the time i get home from work, it's back to normal. Does anyone know what this bubble is? I'll try to get a pic sooner or later if this is too odd.

Thanks,

Could be a sweeper tentacle, used for defensive purposes, just a guess?
hmm.. it's more like a bubble the size of a quarter. Not really a long "thing".. .but then again I've never seen the sweepers before, so I really don't know.

There is a coral at my lfs, maybe a moon coral I can't remember, anyways it had a nickel sized bubble on it, and they told me it was a sweeper tentacle. I guess some coral don't have really long tentacles, they use whitish clear bubbles.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Kinda strange.. how would you be able to sweep, if your a bubble? (Philosophical question here. ;) )

I would assume it acts as an airbag. Suppose a hermit comes too close, it can blow up and push/sting whatever is near.

my hammer does that from time to time.. i believe it's growing more tentacles.. some grow from the middle out... since as i've noticed the bubble go away, a new hammer head appears. just my observation

btw.. or it could be branching.. i have a rather small branch hammer, used to have three heads.. it had that whole bubbly thing in the middle about a week or two ago... today, a fourth head is forming.. the head that had the bubbly stuff is splitting into two heads.. good luck!

Hey, Just to show you guys, here's a photo... taken when the lights were off, which is why it's small, otherwise it expands about 3 times larger than shown.

that's a big bubble... but i'm sure it won't look as big when the hammer is inflated during the day.. i've only seen the bubble in the center of mine during the day when the lights are on, never tried looking when the lights are off, but that's pretty much in line with how mine looked like

Yup.. during the day, this bubble is hardly noticeable because the "hammer arms" are much larger with the lights on.

Wings,
Every time my branching torch splits, it has a bubble just like that. I bought it about 3 years ago with 3 heads, now I count 15 heads and its about 10" in diameter and still splitting. :D It will stay like that for awhile, I can't really remember how long but in the end it will split. Good luck.

Thanks for the info! ...didn't think it was going to die because it looks really healthy (aside from the bubble). :)
