Anybody have experience or references on the use of precious bodily fluids to feed your reeftank? Daniel Knop mentions the use of blood to feed clams in his Giant Clams book, but he's concerned about blood-borne pathogens. I wonder if Peter North keeps a well-fed reeftank?

I don't know, but despite all of my efforts, so far I haven't seen any little calms with my face on them in my tank....

Body fluids should not be used in your reef tank. That is just not necessary. Keep your body fluids to yourself.

In all seriousness, I agree with Louey. I can't imagine why anyone would even contemplate this.

What kind of blood was knop considering that would carry blood-born pathogens that could create any problem for a clam?

Might just be another excuse for some people to have some more, "time to themselves". "Honey don't come in, I'm just feeding the reef".

Dan, I don't think he was worried about the clam. He was using some type of mammalian blood (can someone look it up for me?), and I think he was concerned of transmission to an aquarist.

Okay, share your fluids with someone you love. But keep them out of your reef. lol

Makes a little bit of sense. A red blood cell would probably stay intact in saltwater and would be nutritious if eaten by a coral or clam. It's be about the right size. Good way of dosing iron I guess :D

Where do you find cow or pig blood exactly?

From a cow of pig, of course.

There's got to be a better way!

When I lived in Hawaii, I wanted some blood to go fishing for hammerheads. I went to the local market and asked the guy at the meat counter.
He went into the back and came back with a couple of pints of pig's blood. He priced it at 20 cents.
I bet, if one asked, one could procure blood from their local market.
