In addition to what you going to hear, I strongly suggest you use the Search feature (it is free, BTW) and see if you can find previous posts related to your question.

240 gal is right in the middle... anything smaller, I would say get it in glass. Anything bigger, I would say get it in acrylic. I am leaning toward acrylic...

I am in the same situation you are, frogman. I'm deciding between glass and acrylic for my upcoming 190 gallon. Right now, I'm leaning back towards acrylic. Glass is a lot more scratch resistent and deal with the heat of MH better, but acrylic is clearer, lighter, cheaper, and more easily customizable. I do worry about all the coralline that is going to start encrusting acrylic (does more so then on glass, and you have to be a lot more careful to remove). It's really the scratch factor that is concerning me. My acrylic will be "overbuilt," just in case.

I have a 300G acrylic tank and will someday replace it with a 300G Glass Tank this will become my sump in the basment.
I have a 90G Glass Tank and love it. Acrylic scratches so easy my tank is now barebottom. Its hard to clean with sand you get a small grain of sand under your magnetic cleander and thats a scratch.
Coraline seems to grow fast on my acrylic which is good for the back but tough to get off the front.
Thats my experience with acrylic.

When my 11ft tank was built acrylic was not an option. Because of cost and availability in the uk basically. Now it has dropped drastically. But although acrylic has a few beneficial factors it still has it's draw backs. The main one being how easy it is to scratch. My 11 ft tank is due this month to be stripped down, and the chap who is having it has had an acrylic tank made 15x4x3 and my tank is going to be the sump. 2000 british gallons. Now he has done lots of research on acrylic and says that the new stuff is better. I dont know. Time will tell. And i cant wait to get some pics when its all finished.

i have a 65 gallon reef that is acrylic and it is the worst mistake i ever made in the hobby. i dont care how careful you are , you are gonna scratch it and at first you will try to buff them out etc. , but after a while you will simply give up as i have and vow to never buy another acrylic tank as i have . i am currently setting up a 180 and you can bet it will not be acrylic.............just my two cents.

According to my tank builder there is a new type of acrylic out that they can use on the front glass. Basicly it has a thin pain of glass bonded to it so that the acrylic does not get scratched, and is basicly invisible. He sad that it is a little more difficult to cut and expensive but I think it would be woth having on just the front pain

I would go with glass just for cleaning reasons, I also have 2 kids (6 and 2) and you can bet that there are little hand prints all over it and chunks of food from the 2 year olds grubby little paws :) I tell you it is much easier to clean it off the glass tank then my widescreen TV (plexi front)
