I had to cut the power to my tank last night and now my skimmer pump won't restart. I've taken it apart and cleaned it, but still nothing. If I plug it in and remove the impeller housing, it starts to work. But as soon as I put the housing back on the impeller stops. Any suggestions?

Try this.

Wiggle the impeller in the cover before installing into the pump.

Start the pump without the cover then carefully put the cover on.

No matter how carefully I put the cover on it causes the impeller to stop.

Problem solved. The impeller magnet had expanded, probably due to heat. $27 for a new impeller and it works just fine.

Where did you get a new magnet for $27? Did you just insert the old shaft and impeller on to the new magnet?

I got a whole new impeller assembly for $27 at my LFS.

cool

I'll have to look into them.

I came home and noticed my skimmer is not working like it should. It appears its not mixing enough air. I tried cleaning it with no luck.

I had the same thing happen to a RIO. It over heated and the magnet rubbed. You may be able to sand it down to fit and keep it as a spare. Get some emory cloth and wet sand it until it runs.

Try soaking it in viniger before you start buying stuff. Make sure you do the venturi also. Check the tubing. I do not know if it can be cleaned with viniger, maybe just hot water.
