well the lord that you pictured there matt is a more 'common' indo lord. the blue red coloration is quite common of lords from the indopacific. the really nice colored stuff comes from japanese waters (where it is illegal to export). the lords posted in the first few pics on this page are from a japanese tank. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthr ... adid=49792

prices on the 'common' lord colors will probably drop within the next couple years with aquaculture and importation working together but prices on japanese pieces will NEVER drop(unless, of course, japan allow exportation of corals).

what i don't understand is why people complain about the price. people will pay how much for a tiny frag of tyree purple monster? 100bucks? how much would a colony cost? 1k? 1.5k? how about zoanthids? those are pretty pricey as well. PPE's are still selling for 40-60 bucks per polyp a year after they were popular! lords are the same way. i have no problem paying 60-100+ bucks for a nice lord polyp. wouldn't bat an eye at spending 1.5k on a colony(cuz the fact is, if you frag it, you can make more than what you spent and still have a good sized chunk left for yourself!) if i could ever scrounge up that kind of dough! it's all relative as to what your opinion of 'nice' is. personally, i don't really care for open brain corals(i can't even tell you if that pic you posted is a wells or trachy, etc....that's how much i don't care for them!)...but lords for some reason just caught my attention.

The pic I linked earlier was the one that went for $455.

OK, so are these the type that should go for that much? Still silly. I saw three Favias yesterday with more intense colors.

Feel free to spend ungodly amounts of money on coral. I just think this whole genus is a fad and ridiculously overpriced.

I hereby declare that Platygyra will be the new cool coral to keep. Retailers, raise your prices

Lame.

I predict people will be paying hundreds for frags of dull Caribbean corals when/if they finally become available.

Aren't people falling all over themselves to try and get A. palmata (illegally) already? Weird. It's brown.

People fall all over themselves to get anything from the TWA/Caribbean. One of the biggest reasons I hate being on the public aquarium floor working on the Caribbean exhibit at work is because reefers (we have a lot locally) come in, the volunteers point them in my direction (despite my asking them not to) and 99.99% of the time, the first thing out of their mouth is "Is there any chance at all I could pleeeease get a frag of..."

Where have you heard about people trying to get elkhorn? They're just going to kill it, guaranteed, no problem. People just don't seem to get it or they just don't know when it comes to that coral.

If you really think THIS coral....

...is 10 times prettier than THIS coral, you've lost your mind.

Good point.

Ricordea have lost favor but I still love this guy...

I like ricordea as well. I just like the colors and look of both them and acanths. For me, price of livestock really doesn't matter, as long as I like the look and color of the piece.

Peace,

The least he could do is cover the shipping for the poor sap that buys it. I'm extremely unimpressed with this piece (and the genus altogether).

Ba ha. Unbelievable. Give me a $30 mushroom rock over that. At least it sways in the current, and has more color.

Some RC threads.

Be careful not to read `I would love to have some elkhorn' with actually trying to get it. Maybe I missed the threads you speak of, but recall myself wishing I could get Elkhorn on a thread. Probably wishing I had a tank big enough to house it, and likely wishing I was back in Bonaire too :)

Being located in the Midwest it's like wishing I could have a bottle of scotch with Arundhati Roy on the Moon. It sure is fun to wish for ... but it ain't going to happen - yet I could see plenty of concern if voiced by someone in that region/regular visitor. Or by someone working actively to get some.

And plenty of annoyance on Galleon's part by being asked to provide something that isn't allowed. [I'd ask them in return if they ask police for drugs/stuff out of the evidence room]

---

Count me as one more watching this tulip craze ;), no wait, this rose anemone craze, no wait, this blue zoanthid/PPE craze, no wait, this tort craze, no wait, this acanastrea craze ... and just shake my head.
Is this the same hobby I got into?

So what do you say to someone like myself, who wants quite a few of the acanths, chalices, etc, simply because I think they look fantastic, and I love the colors/patterns? That doesn't mean they will be all that's in my tank...I love frogspawn, acros, etc, and will have those as well.

I'm not fragging anything once I get colonies going from the frags I'm going to buy as far as acanths are concerned. I just want them because they look awesome.

Peace,

Chip

Dude, wish I had known you like chalices. I no longer wanted mine and just traded away my last piece of pink/blue echinophyllia aspera.

That's okay...I'll get them eventually. :)
