I just wonted to say what a great web site this is I found it about two weeks ago and its great. I am setting up a 60 gallon tank and was looking to get a protein skimmer. After reading some of the post I ordered the Remora Pro and think it is going to be a great skimmer. The question I have is I need light. I am thinking of an Aqua light Pro HQI / Compact Fluorescent / Lunar Light Fixture. It has a 150W DE HQI Bulb. I read some ware that a 150HQI is like a 250 SE does any one have experience with this product or opinion on what would work. I am looking at having clams in the tank if the water parameters are stable enough.

I dont think a single 150 hqi would be enough light on a sixty gallon. Two 150's would be a good idea, two 250's would be even sweeter.

Welcome to RDO!

Most MH lamp/reflector combos are good for about 2' of light coverage. If your tank is longer than that, you'll need more.

What are you going to stock your tank with?

My tank is 3' wide the light fixture I am looking at has 1- 150w HQI 10K and 2-65Wactinic blue PC. I was hoping to keep some anemones, leather coral, xania and maybe one of the less light intense clams like the Squamosa or the Derasa . I am curing 60lbs of Lalo live rock and have about 30lbs of rock in an existing tank I am going to use some of it later. I still have a few weeks before I purchase the light and just need some advise on where and what kind of fixture to purchase. I don’t won’t to waste money on a fixture I have to replace later. I do not intend to put a top on the tank and am looking at something besides a pendent. Can any one help?

jgreenway... :welcome:

As for your lighting needs... I would advise you to go with a 2x250W fixture. For the size tank you have, a single 150W will not have a great spread of light. The DE fixtures are usually significantly more than the mogul sockets as well, so the price might not be as intensely different as you think. Especially if you can do it yourself with a retrofit kit.

Heat depends on many factors... how close to the water the lamps are, if it is enclosed, how much air movement there is nearby... how big a surface area the tank and the sump have...

I run 4x400W MH and 2x160W VHO on my 200g tank.

I have the Coralife Aqualite Pro 48" model on my 75G tank. It has two 175W DE MH, 2 96W Actinic PCs, and 3 LEDs. I kinda splurged on the unit, but now I'm gald that I did. I've been very pleased with the unit so far. Here's abrief summary of my experience, in case it helps you decide...

There are 4 power switches -- one for each MH, one for the the PCs, and one for the LEDs. This lets you run each light on a separate timer to create a 24 hour light cycle. It also has an integrated cooling fan that blows directly up from the middle of the unit. It switches on when the MHs come on. I cut a hole in the top of my cabinet right above the cooling fan and mounted another cooling fan there to allow the heat to escape. I have the cooling fan connected to the same timer that controlls the MHs, so when they come on, my extra cooling fan also comes on. So far the heat build-up has not been too bad, the max water temp I have seen is 82F, but it is winter now. Hopefully things won't get too hot in the summer.

The only gripe I have is that the power cords are really freakin long. My tank is in a custom-built cabinet, and I had electrical outlets installed above the tank location for the ligths. So, I have 10 feet of cord where 1 to 2 feet would do. Unfortunately, the cords do not disconnect from the unit (in which case I could replace them with shorter cables), so I have to live with bunched-up cords everywhere.

The unit comes with 4 attachable feet, which position the lights about 8 inches above the water. When I was first getting ready to install the lights, I had already attached the legs and had put the lights on the floor while I did some work in the cabinet. I looked back a few minutes later to see my 2 year old standing on the lights. 8O One of the legs broke, but other than that the lights still work fine. So, they're well made.

Overall, I think the Aqualite product is very nice and I highly recommend it.
