Currious....

If you only had ONE additive (besides salt of course) to add to a reef system.. what would it be? OH..all in one's count... 'cause it's in the same bottle haha.

Kalk. I need to give the two parts a whirl though. No opinion on them, seeing how I havent tried them.

I'm with Reef Box and liquid: b-ionic / c-balance if I was limited to one additive.

I also think that kalk or a two part additive are most useful.

The key is that the two main items that are consumed in a reef tank chemistry-wise are alkalinity and calcium so take care of those and you're pretty well set. Occasionally you might have to adjust your magnesium but no where near as often as dosing calcium or alk.

bob, how about plant life? I think that's the best additive you can think of after hours of poundering...

I usually use a blender to process the fish before putting it in my reef tank... Coral too? I hope it is soft coral, otherwise, the blade on the blender won't last too long... chopped Xenia, for example, is a good additive since it provide lots of essential proteins and amino acid to the coral, just like volka and blood (EDTA added to prevent clogging).... ;)

You must add plant life first. First you add your plant life and get it growing as your first step. Then, after your plant life is growing, you make sure to keep it growing, as plant life is the most important thing, the plant life that is. Get the plant life growing first. Then, your work is done really. Just add tap water and stir.
Plant life will maintain your water at optimal levels to sustain all reef life in your tank over a million, billion years. You need not do water changes, ever, as vigorous plant life will remove everything form your water that is potentially harmful to you or your inhabitants, and will add anything you could possibly want. (except for calcium, which is taken care of by an ounce of oyster shells per 200 gallons tank volume) Plant life will remove copper, heavy metals, feces, cat urine, household contaminants and boogers from the water column which is good if you have little kids around your tanks. Furthermore, plant life will also dose maintain Strontium and iodine levels, as well as treat for ich and other problem parasites. Don't worry about current, plant life takes care of this. Just make sure it's healthy, and you get it growing first. Get you plant life going first, and you never have to clean your tank, dose it, do water changes, or even heat it! Get your plant life going first, and there is no need for a heater or lights. Did I mention that? Plant life will take care of your lighting issues too, just get the plant life going first. Also, if you get your plant life going as your first step, you don't need a tank. The plant life will contain the water for you all by itself, it surrounds the water and keeps it from leaking all over the floor. Don't waste money on expensive things like glass or acrylic boxes, just get your plant life going. Do that first. In fact, if you get the plant life going first, you can use the plant life as a return pump for you system.
So, in closing - for a healthy 200 gallon SPS tank you only need plant life (get it growing as your first step), two ounces of oyster shell, and tap water.
