Fragging Montipora Danae

Just wondering if anyone else has a particular method that they prefer when fragging Montipora Danae (or a similar encrusting SPS).

How much patience you got? The way I frag all my encrusting corals is by putting rubble rock around (or even on) them and letting the coral grow over it. Then I break the rubble rock off and wala! ... you've got yourself a nice frag with a nice base too

Hold it under water and snap it if possible. I also use Len's idea, most corals and polyps in my tank have a rock or shell leaning against them.

Hmm, I don't think I have the cojones to take a Dremel to this piece. I may try the rubble idea.

Well, turns out I lack little patience, and I went ahead and fragged it using a hammer and screwdriver today . I was sweating bullets cause I was doing this to a Superman Danae 8O . Stupid, huh. I wanted to do it right away because the Danae had encrusted around and underneath the tiny piece of live rock where it would receive little light and could end up getting buried.

Fortunately, I got a very good break. I ended up with two large pieces (to mount on my rockscape) and 4 small pieces (which are now mounted on rubble).

Guess I had the cojones after all .

I think you mentioned before that you were able to obtain one of these pieces. Do you remember it being called an M. Danae (which is what most list it as)? I'm just curious, since the same piece is referred to as M. monasteriata here: http://www.reeffarmers.com/limitedmonti ... eriata.htm

Meh...it's doing 'okay' right now in a holding tank in the shop until my new tank cycles.

I'd never have the guts to frag one, tho.

I either use Len's method, (if it's a very thick rock the coral has encrusted) or just smack the thing like you did Reefnuts.
Sometimes they are thin enough to just break by hand as well.

Or it's just some folks have more money then sense.

All said, I'd pay a good amount for a nice sized piece, but you wont see me on a 5 year long waiting list!

That place has nutty waiting lists, and the prices aren't great either. I have a little frag of it that has gone from 1/2 to a couple of inches. I would use Len's method, although I have whacked big pieces to split a purchase with another reefer. Every little bit will grow, usually.

That's a pretty nice looking coral, tho.
