I have narrowed by skimmer choices to either the AquaC EV-240 or the ASM G-3 for my 240 gallon tank that is arriving the end of April.

Lowest Prices I could find with pumps:

ASM G-3 with Sedra 5000 $260

AquaC EV-240 with Dolphin DP-1200 or Mag12 $484.00

Is it worth the extra money to get a AquaC?

What does the AquaC have over ASM or is it personal perference at this point?

Thanks
Kirk

Having owned the EV120 and ASM G2, I can make some comparisions. The ASM is a bit more quiet (if you elevate the pump off the sump floor), a lot more energy efficient, simplier to dial in, and less sensitive to changes in water condition (both a good and bad thing). The AquaC is more powerful, turns over a greater volume of water and doesn't heat the water as much if you run the pump in-line. Both work great and are equally easy to service. You just have to pick your priorities.

I've used AquaC 150 and ASM G2 as well before, I liked AquaC better, as slightly elevated noise level is not a problem for me. However, I don't like ASM's construction. Feels a bit flimsy.

Both are very good, imo. I have an EV-240, so I'm a little biased about which one I think you should get! :D

Thanks for all the replies.

Is the following statement a true statement?:

A protein skimmer is as quiet as the pump you have?

(Most likely the pump will be submersible in the sump).

I am leaning towards the AquaC as I like its design, but just curious if I will hear it with the doors to the stand closed? Hence the first question about pumps.

Thanks.

I would say the only noise of any consequence on my AquaC is my Sen900. With a mouse pad underneath the pump, it's pretty quiet...but my guess is you will still hear it.

I would get a ASM G4+ for about the same $ as the aquac 240 + pump. (I've seen them going for as low as $415 with the sedra 9000)

I don't think a G3 at almost 1/2 the price is a fair comparision. I don't think a G3 is a good enough skimmer for a 240.

The ASM's are made of extruded acrylic so they aren't quite as solid as skimmers made from cast acrylic but they still function well.

FWIW, Nathan
