How does one prep the following for the addition of an RBTA?

1. Maxi Jet 1700 pump
2. Tunze stream 6000 pump
3. Drain strainer on back wall of tank that goes down to an Iwaki pump on a closed loop

Thanks

The only true way to positively avoid disaster would be to not have either the anemone or the pump(s) in the tank.

Putting the anemone on an isolated rock "island" is the best bet. They rarely if ever cross the sand to the glass or other rocks...rarely, not always.

hope this helps.

Obviously eliminating the pumps is not an option. I read people cover pump inlets with sponges, so I was wondering what kind of sponges or products I could get the make the 3 items I listed above anemone-safe.

For the island idea.... I've heard they will just inflate and float to other areas.. if they aren't happy .. yes?

Thanks

Yes they will float away if they are not happy.

Cover all inlets with fiberglass window screen. These do have to be cleaned regularly and will cut down on the flow rate.

I had a sponge over the intake of a powerhead. Everything looked fine in the morning (the anemone was about 2 feet away from the powerhead), but when I got home from work one day the sponge was sitting on the subtrate below the powerhead and the my anemone was halfway inside, all chewed up. Either the anemone pulled off the sponge itself, or there was a murder in my tank made to look like a suicide.

i am wondering what i will do with my tunze stream and have come to the following conclusion..

either i will set it far away from the glass to where it sticks out like a sore thumb or build a custom intake screen.

i have been trying to dream up a decent looking intake screen and possibly use some cured portland cement... i don't know though... it would be difficult to make look good and i might just go anemoneless instead.

an anemone will find disaster sooner or later if it is left open for it to find... they have really amazed me how they will head straight for whatever is most dangerous for them.

Makes you wonder why they are attracted to suction... maybe an appealing place to stick their foot??

I'm waiting to see what Roger from Tunze has to say about covering the stream for an anemone.

Anyone else able to share their methods for covering the above listed items?

Do people use rubberbands to hold sponges/prefilters on?

Thanks.

Tunze has that fake rock cover thingy and it looks like it may keep it away as well as a sponge would.

First, sponges clogg very quickly and reduce flow prior to clogging.

Second, anemones are probably attracted to the increased flow and the tend to find the intake before the return.

You can create the island in the center of the tank, surrounded by fine substrate, and be taller than mid-depth. It is not a flawless plan, but it normally works when combined with moderate flow and strong illumination.

Good Luck
