Recently I broke down my 3 year old 60 gallon tank with DSB and plenum to upgrade to a 100 gallon. My sand bed was 8 to ten inches in depth in places. I had read and observed posts over the years that said upon opening it up there would be obvious dead spots and more then likely a stinking sulpher smell.

Suprised to say I infact found the the opposite there was no smell at all and the sand looked very "clean".

So this is not a lone observation. Deanos my DSB had plenty of critters and I agree that this is probably a big help. Funny I had fears of opening up this foul smelling pit. Instead I found quite the opposite. Anyone else open a DSB lately?
