in that case youll also have to take into consideration that its a hell of alot cheaper to set up a 10 gallon than it is a 50. Not to mention stockin the thing. So comparing a 10 gallon that cost x amount of money, to a 55 that cost y amount of money, IMO isnt a fair comparison.

but on the other hand, comparing tanks of equivalent sizes is more than fair. If it is no holds barred on the sizes, they should be judged as such.

I meant that... a 10 gallon is going to be alot cheaper to setup, maintain, and stock than a larger aquarium. So the larger the tank, the fundamentally larger sum of money you will have to have sunk in it. A tank that is 10 gallons will cost a certain amount of money to setup and stock. Lets just say 300 beans for an example. A comperable 50 gallon with equivalent stocking and equipment will cost alot more than the 10 gallon.

So comparing a 10 gallon that cost 300 dollars, to a 55 that cost 1000 dollars isnt exactly fair.

still lost?

The other part meant that it would only be fair if you divided into categories after everyone had started. Kinda like lightweight, flyweight and heavyweight. ie:

Tackett enters a 10 gallon
Lawdawg enters a 50 gallon
podman enters a 29 gallon
bingo enters a 20 gallon
person A enters a 5 gallon
bob enters a 40 gallon planted tank.
unleashed enters a 60 gallon tank.

you would just divide them up into:
0-20 gallon division, 21-30 gallon division, 31-40 gallon division, 41-50 gallon division.....

CRAP nevermind, I am smoking crack....this will never work this way.

What about this....

We put a spending limit on the tanks, but it doesn't matter of the size... the tanks are then judged by the same standards..

If you think you can make a 100g look as cool as a 10 for $150 then knock yourslef out.

Just an idea.

At any rate we will have to have 2 or 3 guys get together and just TELL everyone what the rules are.. we all know a true DEMOCRACY doesn't work.. just turnes into anarchy :)

How about a points system? Say the judges are given 5 points to award as they see fit for economics. these should be awarded seperatly from points for creativity, asthetics, natural look or whatever, but would still count towards the total winning points. This way, someone who spent say $5000 on a 10g tank would actually LOOSE points for going way overboard, while someone who set up a 60g for $400 would get points for stretching his bucks to the max. Sound good?

I posted this in the size thread, as it pertains to both, making for a way that people with larger tanks can compete on a fair level.

Ya, we know valentine's day is around the corner. Thanks for the reminder.

Speaking of which, I need to pass the hint to my wife that it will be very nice of her to get a 20G tank for me as valentine's day present...........

eh, it's Pod that you need to tell him to K.I.S.S. now, as he is the rule maker.......

Oh, heck, F-with the spending limit. I've changed my mind.

BTW, whose gonna benefit the most out of competitions like these? The reefing community? The general public's awareness?

Nah, It's those that are in the trade will.

Heck people, let's set the limit to $2000 for the 20G tank, and more contestants, happier the LFS guys........

Speaking of which, I think Dizzy, kalkbreath, Cortez Marine, and DBM should each give Pod a big wet kiss........

Okay, since the vote seems 50/50, why can't we just have two divisions...one with a limit, and another without????

That would level the playing field.

I like the idea of just keeping track of what you spend or where you got your equipment (DIY, leftovers, ect.), and listing it as part of your description of how you set up your tank.

I for one am probably not going to buy anything, save for a new bulb or maybe an extra powerhead.
