Hi Everyone,

I am sure this has been asked before, but.... What skimmer would you recommend for a 90 gallon tank? It has 2 holes drilled in it for overflows, and eventually I will move my 'stuff' from my 29 into the 90, then try to setup the 29 as my sump.

I figure I have some time before I need to get it, so I can start looking around for good prices, or find a 'Previously Owned' Model. :)

Thanks for any Advice!!

Hi Mike,

I am also in the process of gathering equipment for a 90 gal.

I have been looking into skimmers and think I am going to go with the AquaC EV-180 with either a mag-7 or Iwaki 40rlt.

Here's a link to MarineDepot so you can check it out...This is the EV-180 with a Mag 7

http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=AC180M

from what I have been told by others here and around the other boards, they are very good skimmers.

The only reason I am unsure which pump I want is because I haven't made up my mind if I want a simple submersible pump in my sump or an external arangement which would require more bulkheads being drilled in the sump. Both pumps are excellent choices on the EV-180.

I have used both the myreefcreatios and euroreef skimmers. Both have pros and cons, but overall I was happy with both.

I have an AquaC EV180 on my 90g! I would get the biggest you can afford. and it is the best skimmer i have owned.

Check out my links you can see how it is set-up!

Thank you for all the advice!!! Now for some reason, my wife has it in her head that we need an 'Out of Sump' Skimmer... Would these all fit that, or should I be looking at something else?

Thanks again!!

I know you can set up the EV-180 as external by plumbing the outlet to a bulkhead fitting in your sump or by using a downward slanting pipe if you place the skimmer outlet higher than the hight of your sump.

Just remember, anything plumbed external increases the possibility of leaks (read as flood) and if for some reason the skimmer goes hyper active and overflows your collection cup, the water will go on the floor instead of simply running back into the sump like it would if the skimmer is in the sump. If I do decide to go with the external pump, I am still planing to have the skimmer setting in the sump for these reasons.

this might be a dumb question, but is it ok to go over on the gallon rating for a skimmer? like a 100 gallon rated skimmer on a 72 gal? or is this a no no?

That's fine, and IMO you're actually better-off that way since most companies overrate their skimmers (IMO). ER is one of the companies that seems to be realistic on their recommended tank sizes though...

I have tried lots of Aqua-C models and IME find their injection model to be bust. I don't even think they are close to as good as a euro-reef or bullet. I have owned lots of skimmers and feel I have gotten the best results from my PM bullet 3. The bullet 3 moves more water then my old euroreef CS8-3 but the CS8-3 seemed to have better contact time. In the end the bullet 3 still was the best performer.

Not true, just use a waste collector with auto shut off. My PM has been running external for years with out a leak, ever.
