Hermit crab replacing their shells

How often do hermit crabs replace their shells? I have about 25 crabs in my 55 gallon tank. How many shells, on average, should I have in there for them?

I would just toss in a hand full of shells slightly larger than the ones they have and leave it at that.

As some of them trade shells, others will take the ones they leave behind.

Agreed with Laura..
I have about 30 or so. I have about 10 empty shells. They will switch and smaller ones will take the newly left behind shells etc. I dont like leaving a lot of shells in there as it is just more places for detritus to hide.
