Where do you put your input for the closed loop. I had mine put on the back panel at the middle bottom. I added the strainer and am having to move rocks to clean off the strainer when it gets clogged. PITA! I am thinking of adding an elbow to the bulkhead to bring the strainer up towards the top off the rocks where I can easily clean it. Where do you have yours?

My input is on the bottom of my tank under some rocks. I have not had clogging issues yet.

What size tank, input bulkhead, type of strainer and pump are you using? Last time I used a closed loop years ago was a 55 gal tank, 3/4" bulkhead, standard strainer and a MaK IV pump, with the input on the back left side about 1/2 way up, never had to clean it.

I never have to clean mine either. I use plastic window screening over the bulkhead.

If you have to clean the strainer, it would appear to me to be too small. Try something larger and longer. If the strainer is large enough, the limited incoming pressure will allow fish and critters to pick off the strained particles. Mine hasn't clogged in 3 years.

Sorry my post reads as if I have cleaned it. I was using a bad strainer and replaced it with the screw in type so had to move rocks to get to the strainer. My Mak 4 impeller broke so I bought a new pump, its a Panworld 50pxx. I installed the new pump and was thinking having the strainer behind the rock was a bad idea b/c I cant see if it gets clogged. It seems I shouldnt have to clean it very often.

Sounds like all of you never have to clean yours. Mine is a 1" bulkhead and threaded strainer. Maybe soon I will be brave enough to post some pics of my 40 breeder. It has only been up a month and a half and I am still not really happy with the amount of flow.

With my Mak IV I wasn't crazy with my circulation either. I T'd a spraybar to the output near the top and also used 4 Maxijet 1200's, two on the back of each side pointed slightly to the front center and two on the bottom of each side near the back facing each other. I should have just used a more powerfull pump.

yeah even the new panworld isnt doing much, I should have just gone up a few models. The pump is very quiet though so my wife will be happy. Right now I have the CL at about 820 gph after headloss ect., the HOB I use for phosban at 200gph, a maxijet 1200 with a ehiem impeller in it @ 295 gph and my return pump which is going about 500 gph.

It a 40 breeder so I get about 45X turnover but I think I could use closer to 60-65x.
