Here is a pic of a large bubble algae I had the pleasure of removing from my 46 gallon during a recent "rearrangement" of the tank. 8O . I prayed several times as I removed it without popping it in the tank!

Awesome! I think those huge bubble algae are hilarious!

I don't get them anymore as my sailfin tang thinks bubble algae is delicious.

Nice. I have one that big in my tank (20 gal) and I can't reach it. I know if I try to get it I'll pop it!

So i'm letting it grow.

ok color me stupid but it has been a while since having to deal with algae. Why don't you want to break them in your tank. I have a tiny one and was thinking about popping it but that nagging little voice in my head kept saying not too. So I jumped on here and low and behold here is a post about it. SO... I will ask the dumb newbie question. Why not?

IIRC the inside if filled with spoors. Pop it in tank and they spread.

Yeah, that's how they reproduce, similar to how some viruses that hijack your cells do (AIDs is an example... although bubble algae isn't as bad ;)). Basically if you pop them they release their spores and start the cycle over, ie more bubble algae.

If you want to remove it, the best way is to remove the rock and just remove it outside the tank so if you pop it no big deal then put the rock back in, but if its on a large rock you dont want to remove, probably the best way is to get a little hose (the size of the bubble algae unless you have one of those balloon sized ones!) start a siphon and put it right near the algae, typically they are not very tightly attached to the rocks so it's almost like removing a pomegranite seed, if you pop it the siphon over it should suck out all the spores.

I should have kept it and popped it in my friend's aquarium  . That will teach him to have an "algae free" setup
