Mirror behind the Aquarium

Hi,

I was thinking of a new project. I mean I 'm going to do my 245 gallon aquarium build in the wall. I thought that I can put a mirror to the back of the tank so it will look bigger when viewed from front. Is there someone that have a mirror behind the back glass of the tank ? Any tips please !

Hi Adamas, and :welcome:

Your idea sounds interesting. I'm not quite sure how it would look, but it might look good before the back glass get's all covered in coraline algea. That is unless you intend to keep the back glass clean.

I am planning a 300G built-in at my house and I was planning to leaving the back glass clear so that the tank is viewable from both sides. If seeing though to the room in the back becomes annoying when viewing it from the front, I could always paint the back then.

Post pics of your set-up once you get going.

Mirrored backs freak the fish out. We tried this in our shop for the fish holding system. It does not work well.

Yeah, I freaked out my fish real bad with a mirror once. I was trying to get my flasher wrasse to "flash" at himself, :roll: and my tang caught his own image and flipped. I mean totally went nuts, bashing into the glass and thrashing around. Even when I took the mirror away he was all out of sorts for days!

I have seen a 800gallon thread over at reefcentral where he used mirrors. It worked well but I dont think he just mounted it on the back. If I recall correctly he had them angled so they would reflect other areas of the tank. I remeber it being a freaking sweet tank.

I think I will try this because I think the tank will look much bigger and nicer.. To put the mirror to an angle is a good idea.. I never saw a tank with mirrors behind but I wish I have seen so we can take some Hints..

Yah if you put mirrors DEFINATELY do not put them flat if you have any fish.. if you dont have any fish then no big deal! place them fat. Out of curiosity I put a one of those 12x12" mirrors against the front of my tank to see what would happen, my blue damsel was quite curious, as was my coral beauty, kole tang,and my tomato did rush the glass a few times

Sorry the mirror is not behind the tank but beside it. I would still check it out if I were you.

You are not completly right. This is a fantastic tank, unbelevable I can say.
It has 2 mirrors - one behind and one beside. It page 6 you can see the Back Mirror I am talking about, It is about 18' away from the back glass.

The man says that this serves to increase the perception of depth when viewing the tank. Check this wonderfull tank..........

I have no experience with a mirror, but have always heard that you shouldn't as it freaks the fish out a lot.

I'm confused. I thought he said the whole tank was reflected in the full length mirror. ie: the full length of the wall.

im sorry, the original post was referring to having a mirror be the back of the tank...so that it looks bigger.
This is hat I was referring to...that it freaks the fish out
