Hello. I'm new to the site. I have a few questions on where to place a future tank.
36.5x18.5x25 - http://www.elmersaquarium.com/k4070oc70.htm - But the only problem is that its right on top of a window.

48.5x24.5x24.75 - http://www.elmersaquarium.com/k40120oc120.htm - Only problem with is that the wall I want to put it at. Has no wall outlet. I would have to get an extension cord to reach the nearest outlet.

Please help me.

Thanks,
Joe

Reef to FOWLER?

But I think either way you will need more than just an extension cord to power up your tank. There are plugs galore!!!

Lights
Heater
Pumps
Fans
Ect.

Make sure that the outlet you use will not be over burdend by the Amps your tank will draw.

That being said, I would hate to block a window. Is it possible to wire a new outlet by the second location?

Yeah, an extension cord ain't gonna cut it. Even if you connect it to a power strip or two, I think you will regret it in time.

When you get your tank up you will be amazed at how much stuff you need to plug in.

I wonder how much it would cost to have someone put in a nice 4 outlet GFCI right where you want the tank? I don't know but it might be something to call and ask about. The thing about reef tanks, is you really want to do everything the way you want from the begining, because taking it down and moving it is such a royal pain

What would be wrong with putting a tank close to a window? It is my bedroom. I keep my room rather dark.

Really depends on how much sun comes in which will affect temp and possible algae blooms, how drafty the window is for keeping temps steady through the seasons, and possibly blocking any veiws.

Usually, having a new plug installed by an electrician is going to be around $200. I would spend the $, and that way you will also have the electric on a gfci plug which is highly reccomended. See posts about fires here

In any event, where you put it, is where it will stay for a long time, moving a tank even 3 inches is like moving it across town.

You will need an extension/power strip anyhow, so don't let that influence your decision on where to put it. Window placement (assuming open window) can help with water chemistry, but it will also effect temperature and the amount of light that gets into your tank. There are advantages and disadvantages which has to be weighed case by case.

Oh, and ....

I know with freshwater tanks, natural light from windows is a huge no-no, since it results in massive algae blooms. With the lower nitrate level of salt tanks perhaps it's not as much of a problem, but it's something to be aware of.

My recommendation for the other wall is just to run a sturdy 3-prong extension cord along the wall to your stand. Under the stand, plug one or more power strips into it.
