I'm in a wierd position. First of all, I'm moving into a 2nd floor 1BR apartment shortly as some of you may know. Also, my brother is lookin to get a pretty big tank for his house. My dad suggested I just sell him my 75gal. and I downsize for the apartment, allowing me to get new everything, taking out the weight issue of the apartment, and a cheap alternative for my bro.

If you were to sell an established 75gal to another family member, what would you charge?

It'll include...
Equipment
4NO lighting
CPR BakPak Skimmer
Fluval 403 Canister filter for carbon
3 MaxiJet 1200's
roughly 75lbs. of LR
Heaters

Livestock
GSP's
Shrooms
Yellow Tang
3 Green Chromis

I would want enough off of the deal to make some kinda killer Nano setup, but yet I don't wanna dick over my brother... he COULD always just get the stuff new. FWIW, my brother is 32 and pretty well established, so he's decent with money.

Thanks

This is why they say never do business with family.

Actually, I'd price out the cost of all that stuff as if it was new and retail price.

Then, I'd hack about 25-50% off.

I would agree with 50% off of retail. Unless he has a much better job then you and has lots of cash to spair, then I would go 25%.

Since all you're looking to do is set up a new nano, Figure out what you want, add up the total, and give the number to your brother. He buys your new tank, and he gets a bigger one that's set up and ready to go!

I would figure out what everything costs retail then mark it UP 100-150% just cause he is family. Then I would give him bad info on how to run everything and then sell him more stuff to replace the stuff that went bad. Thats what LFS's do right? lol

not quite sure still, but I'm leaning the way of keeping it. I mean, I don't have the money to upgrade the NO lighting yet, but IMO its still a lot cooler to have a huge tank with a bunch of fish than a 10-20gal. I'm itchin to keep SPS and clams, but I'll try to be patient :)

Ever since I've had it it's been built into a wall, so either way I'm excited to see how it's gonna look free standing

You're not quite at "huge" with 75 gallons there Jandree. :)

Smaller tanks are often nicer since it's cheaper to fill them up with inverts.
I've done very large tanks in the 300 gallon range, and tiny tanks.
For reefs, the very small tanks have been the most striking simply because I didn't have the $12,000 to really make the large tanks look abundant.
You may find that you enjoy the nano as much or more than your 75.
Here is a 12 gallon

okay smart ass, you get my point

That is a great looking Nano, and that's my thinking too... it's so cheap to fill one up with inverts.

In all seriousness though I would agree that you will be regretful later if you get rid of it and down size. However if you do get rid of it then sell it for the price of what you are looking to purchase. Just my opinion. Good luck though, family matters are always delicate.
