TLF phosban reactor questions...

Couple questions,

I have it hooked up off of a tee from my main return pump so really don't know how much in GPH is going through there but didn't want to overdo it and destroy (by grinding down to nothing) the media like the package warns... I have it flowing just enough to fluidize all of the media. The top of the media is about 1" higher when flowing than when off. Does that sound right?

The package says not to rinse. I am assuming that is not to rinse in fresh water but doing so in RO salt would be OK?? I do not like the cloud of brown silt entering my refugium.

Does anyone put both carbon and phosphate media in theirs at the same time? If so how much of each can it handle?

The amount of flow you have sounds good. The media should be fluidized like you describe with a section of clear water above the media. As for the rinsing, I know the PhosBan container says don't rinse. However, the directions with the reactor say "We recommend that the first gallon or two that exits the reactor be directed into a bucket to catch the PhosBan fines." This sounds suspiciously like rinsing to me, which is what I did with salt water from a water change.

I do not use this to run carbon at the same time. As I like to change carbon much more frequently than I need to change the PhosBan, it would make changing carbon difficult.

Must have missed that bit. Good point about changing carbon more often, maybe I'll get a second reactor for carbon.

Is it just me.. or does Phosban release dust into the aquarium after the first few days of running it?? I let the reactor run the first 5 gal of water into a bucket, then I direct flow back into the tank.. but this happens almost everytime! What gets me even more is that I have the flow set at nearly ZERO... just so that the media is BARELY tumbling in select locations on the surface.

Maybe this is the reason I see so many people using Rowa instead of Phosban??
