So I'm on reef grafitti, and someone says something to the effect of - if i were wealthy, someone else would take care of my tank for me...

and i realized, if i were wealthy, i'd want to do tank maintenance MORE than i do it now.

so i am wondering - how many of us love to do the work "behind the scenes" on our tanks?

what is your favorite part of the hobby? The reading? organizing the corals and rocks within the tank? looking at the fish? watching the late-night activity in your tanks wearing a red light velcroed to your head? (yeah, we know we're all up at 3a.m. watching worms and bugs...)

5. The oohs & aahs my tank gets from non-reefers

4. Painting a picture of living art

3. When non-reefers ask about corals: "Is that alive/real?"

2. The oohs & aahs my tank gets from fellow reefers

1. Relaxing on my couch watching the fish swim around

I like it all setup & maintenance, aquascaping and just sitting around watching the tank.

If I hit the lotto however I would pay someone to service the shark tank so I could sit there in the tank and watch the sharks swim by.

(...not a voyeur - I was particpating in the conversation!!!)

chief - you want to be in the shark tank?

I forgot to say what i love -

-how my kids tell everyone about their fish tank
-how my kids brag that they have a salt water fish tank
-how my kids sometimes stare at the tank quietly when they're eating dinner

-my feeling of satisfaction knowing that i'm educating my kids in taking care of the planet (I tend to think big like that...)

-zoning out watching the tank, day or night

-keeping my scientific hands "wet" taking care of the tank (maintenance/chem tests/coral care...)

and if i had a couple million, i'd get a tremendous apartment (I'm such a city-dweller...) with a VERY strong floor and have a HUGE tank and a staff who would help me make all the right decisions so that nothing i ever put into it would die b/c of my stupidity!!!!

(oh, wait - that's YOU!!!!)

Ummm when I hit the lotto I will build it but I envision a tank that spans 2 floors of my mansion approx the size of the tank in the norwalk aquarium.

Hmm ,I hate the back scene of the hobby ,it get boring :(

But the one thing i like about this hobby ,watching the corals grow and be happy in the tank ,watching the fish swim and do what ever they do ,play hang out .

but the best thing i like ,Is the challange of keeping hard to keep fish . something i always enjoyed. My mandarin ,sunbrusts leapord wrasse and corals too :)

If i was wealthy ,I would just make my tank self maintaining ,all auto!! i mean why not you have the money :D

And yes, the maintenance. My house is a mess cause I spend what little energy I have on my tanks. Oh well, I love my tanks, and the house is not a pig sty. Right Kathy?!:wink1:

Oh yeah, and if I had a million dollars I'd hire a maid, a cook, a lawn maintenance crew, a pool person, and pooper scooper person.:lol_large

I just love being armpit deep in saltwater, fingers pruning and salty mouthed.

Non reefers walking up to the tank, saying look at all those colors. What kind of fish is that......ooooohhhhh, there's Nemo. Then within about two minutes, they don't even notice the fish anymore. All their attention invariably goes to the corals and inverts.

Those are some of the things I enjoy about the tank. The thought of having someone else do the things that encourage those reactions and provide me with that salty pleasure doesn't appeal to me one bit. I want to spend every day doing just tank maintenance, aquascaping, admiring, and of course  while sitting there watching the artwork move.

And you gotta love all the compliments you get from the guests that check out the tank as well... makes u wanna do even better.... other bonuses of the hobby is making your corals and fish grow nice and big... i think thats the best part of the hobby.

I have to say, and I don't mean this in a bad way, I love the non online part of it. I think that I enjoyed MR more before I found the online forums. Sure it didn't look as good as it does now, but I didn't know that. I spent less time on my tank and more time enjoying life. I spent more time outside, more time with my family and when I did spend time with my tank I enjoyed it. There was nothing frustrating about it, I wasn't spending money to upgrade this, or try that. I didn't obsess over the new piece of equipment that I needed. I was happy and I found my tank to be a relaxing fixture in my home.

I find that I enjoy my tank more the less time I spend on reefing forums. Just like in the matrix, like is better when you unplug.

Argh! Thanks for quoting me I mistyped that. To clarify, I meant to type

I enjoyed my tank more before online forums

not that "I enjoyed MR more before online forums" <- that doesn't even make sense.

Either way yes it is still blasphemy.
