I was just in Tampa Florida and there was a LFS on Hwy 580 just off of US 19 in Tarpon Springs that had a clam with beautiful colorations like the one on the top right. The kicker was this clam was huge. I mean it was like the size of a garbage can lid. Not kidding. He was asking 230 dollars for it. I cant imagine what you would feed something like that. If you live in the area I recommend checking it out.

All I did was turn off all the pumps, skimmer, and filter. No tripod, just free handed it.

I took about 10 shots, and that was the sharpest. 1/1000 shutter speed, macro mode, and HI quality on the Coolpix 995

Do you have pendant ligting? I am assuming you did not use flash.

My problem is that I have a hood and have to raise it to get the camera in position for a shot. There is not enough lighting to not use the flash.

Yup, I have a 250W halide pendant. No flash at all.

Not enough lighting? I've taken top-down shots with PC, VHO, and halide.

Peace,

I think he is saying he has to raise the canopy which makes the lights not point down at the tank anymore

therefore not enough light left

Louey, buy one of those cheap little desk mounts for a camera, drill some holes in it and bolt it to a piece of wood and mount that inside your hood, then use a remote to take the pic

that way you get the tripod effect, plus you get the light already there....

You are correct Bryan.

That's an interesting idea Bryan. I do have the remote shutter control for my 995 too!

That is very nice looking Charles 8O 8O

So I've heard of these tanks but never actually seen one...how does the plumbing work? Where are the returns located? What kind of overflow rate is there? I really like how clean it looks.

It looks to me like the tank is filling from the bottom and overflowing down the sides and then getting pumped back in.

Sweet

How high is the wattage on that lightbulb you are using on that clam tank :D

Looks to me like what you said, but I'm confused how the entire tank being drained in the event of a power outage is prevented.

Guess they{ Bruce and GAA}really liked what they saw during their visit to my retail store, Five months later and they build one of thier own.
Most likely this was a no edge style tank. But Like me .......when they added water , found that it takes about eight to ten thousand GPH to get the sides to shed water correctly on a tank this size.

This tank was designed by and is on display at, the Waikiki Aquarium. Bruce Carlson hasn't worked here in over 3 years. He knew nothing of it until I sent him the same pics I posted just here, after it opened to the public. :)

8 to 10,000 gph??? Is that a typo? ... geez thats like a 4 or 5 HP pump! This display runs on a Iwaki 70.

Aloha!

Ill take your word on that . I have five tanks like that in my store. Im in Atlanta,Bruce liked them so much ....... I just put two and two together. Was your tank designed to overflow into the river rock along the base of the tank? I have tried to set up a tank like that . Having no edges , a tank that overflows onto itself keeps very clear and smooth water surface. {the ripples dont bounce back and forth on the top of the water } But the amount of water volume needed to shed water along twenty linear feet of for tank sides is huge. What are the river slicks in the channell along the bottom of the tank for ?

Bruce never mentioned seeing any tanks like this before. Guess I'll have to take YOUR word on that.

The river rocks were my idea, I had seen them used in table top fountains and wanted a similar "zen" look. There is a gap between the rocks and the tank side so the water does not actually go through the rocks.

Like I said, the tank runs on an Iwaki 70 and sheets nicely all around the edges. The tank is 7 ft long and 3 ft wide and 14 inches deep.

Sorry I don't understand your last question ... "river slicks" ?

Aloha!

What are the black corner boxes for? It looks like the water is overflowing into the inside corners. I guess the v shaped waterfall through me off at the bottom right {over the black} It looked to be only over flowing at the black corners. But further inspection shows the tank is indeed overflowing around all edges! Great job. Perhaps my down fall on my tank 4x8 was that I did not bevel the edges enough!

Looks to me like those are just braces, and the water is overflowing on all sides.

the black edging on the corners are cosmetic, they hide the seams, protect them from UV and prevent water from going over the corners (there is a small section on the top to prevent that), so water only flows down along the clear acrylic on all sides.
