SO, is it dying or what?

This is my finger leather, I got a frag a long time ago and now that I have decent lights it has propogated itself into 4 pieces. 2 days ago I did a rather major water change, I had to move it to the bottom of the tank and the tank got pretty cloudy during all my rearranging.

so, its been two days and half of the pieces are not opening or anything, they also have a greenish tint to them.

Seeing as this is the first time I have had this happen I thought I would ask for opinions

It's fine. They do that once in a while. It will shed & come back looking even better than before.

I was didn't think it was, because while I was removing it last night from the tank I clearly heard it say, "I'm not dead yet. I feel happy. I think I will go for a walk"

It looks worse now, its shrunk a bit more and although there are bits of the little prickly things sticking out in places there is a lot of gunk all over it.


Are you saying it sheds something?

Is there a chance that something is picking at it? I had a finger leather look like that for a long time and it turned out my bi-color blenny was grabbing branches and pulling on them really hard. My hippo tang bites at my finger leathers occasionally too.

Every single one of mine looks like that before they shed. They need a pretty good current to actually shed the stuff though.

I do have a bicolor blenny, but I have never seen him go near it.

I think it will be fine too. Leathers do this from time to time and a WC sparks this type behavior sometimes.

I would blast it with a turkey baster. It may need to shed or it is consumming detrius that you stirred up the other day. The WC may also be a factor. I wouldn't worry unless you see some signs of predation.

should be fine, as long as the chemistry is OK-leathers/sinularias regularly close up and shed a 'waxy, cellophane like' substance as part of their growth cycle

if it's shedding the actual sclerites (look like actual 'needles') this may not be a great sign-could be the result of a major chemistry change in iodine/calcium/alk levels (too low)

good current and a few days will let you know

Very true Vitz. My PH/Alk was elevated for a few weeks and my leathers closed up for until it was corrected.

I haven't hit it with a powerhead yet because the lights haven't come one, but from the looks of it with just the actinics on it looks to be better. There is a huge pile of funky looking stuff around it but the little polyps are out again. I will post a pic in about 20 minutes when the main lights come on.

i'll bet the 'pile of funky stuff' is dumped sclerites-you prolly had a nice change in some parameter when you did the WC-i'd double check your alk and Ca level, just to be safe

Leathers periodically shed their skins - it's a way to clean themselves of algae and other things that grow on them.

Today when I got home from work it looked even better than the front one. It has way more polyp thingies than it did before

so I guess whatever it was was a good thing...
