Does the same hold true for large leathers also? Mine appears to have developed bald spots...

Bald spots are different from shedding. Do you have a micro filter that may be stealing food from the leather?

not that i am aware of. this is the skimmer i use. water flows through a cone filter in the over flow, through the skimmer and straight back into the tank.

leathers need excellent strong flow to be happy

That was my second thought. With low flow there are dead spots any place the Leather is cupped. Dead spots = no food, no O2, no Calcium, etc.

It looks like your skimmer is just pulling out water. Is that how it always looks?

Well it isn't "skimming" anything if that is the case. It should be producing a brown foam that stinks.

if i leave the skimmer for two weeks or so, the way it used to be, yes it would begin to smell bad and the top cup would be filled with brown foam. however, since the tank has been with me (two weeks now) i have been cleaning it out as soon as it begins to become covered.

is it bad to clean it that much?

if it is pulling only water, how do you make it work properly?

Many skimmer manufacturers have their instructions available for download from their websites, so when you can check who the manufacturer is that would be a good thing to look into.

There is likely a way to control the height of the water in the skimmer, and if it is pulling out clear water it likely needs to be lowered.
