I presently have two reef's. My main system is 13yrs old and I have a great skimmer on it. My question goes for my 65 gal hex. It's been up for 3 years now but I need to add skimmer. I don't have a sump on this set-up. I'm looking for feedback on piggy back skimmers, or something that I can use effectively without adding a sump. I'm limited on space with this set-up. Any good idea's are appreciated.

I have been considering this skimmer as like you say, its the best, the daddy of skimmers, but I have read on a few forums, of users getting bubble feedback & also the skimmed mess smelling badly.

There are so many opinions on this, but there are indeed a few that stick out from the rest. If you do a quick search it will bring up a few threads on it where it is discussed quite in depth. The only reason I mention that is so if you would like a little more information to help you research before you buy. Personally I have used the AquaC Remora PRO HOT Skimmer, CPR, Cyclone (a long time ago, and would NOT recommend this to anyone), and 2 others that I cannot remember. Of all those I have used in the 7-8 years of reefkeeping I found the AquaC Remora PRO HOT Skimmer to be the BEST. I would also recommend the pump upgrade as well which seems to really help the spray-induction system which is found on all AquaC skimmers. There are also a few others a little cheaper that are almost as good in my opinion.

<-- would recommend a remora.. I love mine... been doing great. You'll need to upgrade to the MaxiJet 1200 pump though for that size tank.

dark stranger,

i don't knwo much about the deltecs but all skimmers make nasty smelling "skimmed mess".
if they don't make a stinky faom then they are not very good skimmers.

lol, I also read that, but didnt want to seem to be a know it all, espically when i'm not. I dont think the misses would think to much of the stink, espically when i want the tank in the livingroom, but i surpose i could blame the kids.

There is a lot of bad press out there about the seacylones, but they changed their design about 1 1/2 years ago (acording to local entheusiests) which fixed many of their problems. I'm using a cyclone 100 on my 55g tank, and it is working wonderfuly. I would recomend you go to a 150 if you decide to put one on your tank. Yes, there are better skimmers out there, but it's worth stopping at your local store and taking a look at.

Aqua C Remora - tried and true. The only HOT skimmer I would have at this time.

I was wondering why after three years you all the sudden decided you need a skimmer?

I was wondering why you feel the need to go down this path in so many different threads?...

I first would like to thanks all who replied. The reason why I haven't added a skimmer to this system is because it never needed it. I'm not able to keep up with the maintinence like I used to. This tank is now full of a combo of acro's and other softy's. Algae growth is beginning to be an issue and I want to bite it in the butt before its a problem. My main tank I run a custom built precision marine skimmer. that system is a wall to wall highend acro's. I do have another 48" MTC skimmer that I'm not using but remember this hex is in my office in my house.

ChrisRD I'm not sure what your question is directed toward's.

Andy H,

I just got done reading up on the Aqua C, it really look's like what I want. The remora-pro will fit easily with the space I have on the back. I do have a mech. filter on it that I will relace. thanks again for your feedback.

Good choice, WildBill. They are very quiet compared to other HOT skimmers. I use the overflow box and MaxiJet 1200 on my 29. It does take a couple of weeks to really start performing at it's peak. In a est tank of 3 years it may break in earlier. Good luck.
