hey guys,

I was pondering the idea of taking my old Emperor 280 HOT filter and hanging it on my 37G reef tank. I was thinking that it would be good to turn on after I blast stuff off the rock and so forth. It would also give me the chance to run carbon during that time. I would also take out the biowheel.

Is this a good idea? Maybe a few hrs a day... a week... what?

Thanks for your opinions :)

I like to run a small HOT filter on my small tanks, but I take the media out of them and only run carbon with them. They do a good job of agitating the surface. I think it would be a good idea to run it while you blasted off the rocks, provided that you removed the filter and cleaned it right after. Other than that I'd just run carbon.

I try to run carbon for 24 hours, once a month.
What 'additives' do you put into the water?

I run a HOB filter w/carbon and Phosban (in a sock), and a Purigen pad that I recharge (bleach it) every two weeks. I also run a surface skimmer to the HOB intake since my Super Skimmer doesn't have that kind of setup.

Since I've been running that, I haven't had anymore probs w/cyano, and no slimy film on the water's surface. Wish I had a sump though.

No sump here either... I do run a Remora MJ1200skimmer that does great... I think I'll put some carbon in my media tray and a floss fliter in font of that and run it one day a week or so... see what happens.

Is there a downside to ALWAYS running carbon???
