I can't believe it, there's popping in my tank! The first few times I heard it I thought it was a floating thermometer hitting the side of the tank (never mind that there are no floating thermometers in there.) but tonight I was walking by about 20 min. after lights out and ... Pop, Pop.

Now I can only hope the relatively new member to my reef family is a small pistol shrimp. Does anything else pop except pistol shrimps and Man... (If don't type it's name it won't really exist)?

Those are the usual suspects.

Here's a question for everyone...if you have a mantis in the tank and hear a pop, doesn't that mean he or she is having lunch? In other words, if you hear popping at night and can account for all of your tank's denizens in the morning, isn't it highly likely you have a pistol?

Nope. Many species of Mantis Shrimp while breaking apart pieces of the rockwork to make rock rubble with which it will use to build its lair will make popping sounds. They're very efficient sledgehammers. :D
It could also be a snail being buffeted against the glass by the flow of a powerhead.

I'm going to be optimistic and hope it was snails. Even if I'm wrong, I can enjoy being in denial till the fish start to disappear
