Does anyone have any experience with phosphate reactors?

Does anyone have a phosphate problem? I was told that phsphates can sneak up and reak havoc on SPS corals. Is this ture? How do you control phosphates? Where do they come from?

All input is greatly appreciated!!!!

P04 will inhibit the cacification process and cause death in SPS over time.

I run GFO (Phoslock, RowaPhos, Phosban) all the time in my SPS tank and have never had a problem. I also do regular w/c and clean the detritus off the BB once a day. P04 comes from lots of sources, feeding, tapwater, animals, ect.

BTW, if you do go the GFO in a fliudized reactor route start off with a very small amount and work your way up to the desired level. Too fast of a drop will cause RTN.

Same here, I used to fight algae. I have a good skimmer, RO/DI water, etc... But only after I added a fluidized bed and ran phosban did my algae problem dissappear. My SPS do not seem to be doing any worse or better after the addition of the fluidized bed. I run it continuously. FWIW I had better results with Phosban than Rowaphos.

I agree and this Phosban is very close to PhosLock, so it also works very effectively. The RowaPhos is more expensive and moist so you may get less weight then the others. The PhosLock has a darker brown and lighter brown color grain while the Phosban is pretty uniform in light brown color, FWIW.

what about "phosguard". i found a bottle of it in my father's closet, unopened. he may have never had a problem with phosphates, but now it seems that my levels hover around 1.0.

what is your "bb", and what is RTN?

BB=Bare Bottom
RTN=rapid tissue necrosis

IIRC, phosguard is alluminun based whre GFO is iron based. Alluminum based products can cause negative effects on certain corals like sarcophytons.

I forgot to add Kent marine came out with a fluidized reactor that is around $#5 and doesnt use thumb screws for media replacement. Much better then the TLF one with all those screws.
