The heartbreak of aptasia continues. Even injecting with concentrated hydrochloric acid hasn't got rid of them -- they just regenerate. My pepermint shrimps prefer to munch down zooanthids, and I don't have room for a chelmon.

Any other ideas? They are taking over. If I try starving the tank the fish look anorexic.

Someone just handed me something called "Joe's juice." Being a chemist, the idea of putting something in my aquarium that I can't identify disturbs me. Does anyone know what is in it, whether it works, and what side effects it might have (eg on bubble tipped anemones in the tank)?

appartently joesjuice rock!.

but you sure you have pepermint shrimp. are you sure they arnt camels?

if some one recomends a nudibranch dont use it.

it will eat most of the aiptasia and then die. the remaining will just start it all back up .

( i am going to be adding aiptasia to my tank from a aiptasia growout tank to feed the nudi :) )

like i said. they end up starving befor they can kill them all.

just get pepermint shrimp ( if what oyu have are actualy camel) and use joes juice. \\

as for startving the aiptasia .. you will never beable to starve them without killing EVERYTHING in the tank

WG, I had a Klein’s butterfly that ate them - they aren't that pretty but they are hardy. I have heard pros and cons about JJ.

Joes juice looks like kalkwasser mixed with something to make the anemones injest it... at least as far as I can tell, I really have no idea. It works very well to manage the anemones, but they seem to come back in the same spots eventually... but slowly.

I wouldn't try to starve your tank though.

I use Joe's Juice all the time. Works great, and have seen no ill effects to other corals. Whats great about killing them with JJ is they think your feeding them....HAHA little @#$^%%&&*

I've had good results with the ever popular hot kalkwasser paste injected by a fine needle (like on an insulin syringe). Cooks them nicely.

I don't know what's in Joe's juice and am leery of putting unknown chemicals in my tank.

Joe Juice Is the only way to go. Just get the syringe close the the mouth and gently inject juice. It will shrink up faster than on a cold day and not return

Joe's juice works ok on some varieties of glass anemone, but some people have the same variety that I have.... You nuke the main polyp and from the shrivelled base spring 10 new ones. I have added 3 peppermints to my tank and they are helping keep down the new arrivals, but of course they won't touch the bigger ones.

I am considering a Copper Banded Butterfly and like cjsrc, I have started a farm tank to grow the aptasia so that the CBB does not starve. The only problem with that solution is that the CBBs may also eat your other mini-anenomes, your clove polyps, and your feather duster worms. So now I am unsure. Reportedly they will also snack on any feathery polyps that look similar to a baby aptasia though I have only heard that from one poster.

Good luck with your aptasia!

I pull the rock out and torch them with a butane torch stick lighter. Like you, I am very very hesitant to add anything to the tank if I don't know what's in it. Upside with this method--you can be damn sure it kills it. Downsides--it's actually kind of tough to see the anemones once you pull the rock out. I like to draw a little map of the rock and put Xs where all the anemones are. Then torch them good. I do one rock a day, and leave it out where it's easy to grab again. You'll inevitably miss a few small ones.

Hope this helps.

That's vicious, I like it! Wonder if that would work on Valonia

I've gone through two containers of Joes' Juice, and most of the anemones come back. I found it worked about as well as homemade kalk paste placed on them with a small syringe.

I was very excited when I first used it because for about a week I thought I had really killed them, but within two weeks I could see them regenerating and comeing back.

I have gotten truly nasty and one time I nuked the Aptasia, then I covered the sump/remains with the pink looking 2 part epoxy. No more anemone, and eventually the epoxy looked natural.

And then after they have no more aiptasia to eat, they'll die and try to take out the tank with it. I'm not a fan of nudibranchs because they tend to leave toxic impressions behind when they die.

I would guess you'd need eye protection, because when heated I bet those suckers pop like Orville Reddenbacker's best, you could loose an eye.....
