I have several that I see munching detritus piles. How effective do you think they are at processing the detritus?

I've got 4 tiger tails that do a great job of keeping the sand bed turned over at the top. Hard to say how effective they are, but for the year when I tried BB, I kept the red and black kind. They stayed on the LR, almost exclusively.

I was cool either way, I just wanted to see what the fuss was about. I needed to syphon out the floor a lot cause I'm a non-skimmer user, so I just went back to SSB (1-2").

Can i keep them in a FOWLR tank that is semi- aggressive??

Probably wouldn't be a good idea for 2 reasons. One, it's difficult to maintain optimal water conditions in a FOWLR tank. It's not that cukes really need pristine water to survive, it's just that they'd more likely become stressed if the semi-aggressive fish start to nip at them.

Than, it's bye-bye fishies :(
