Hello,

As a recent dabbler in Feng Shui, I have learned of a few guidelines for the optimum number and color of fish in a tank.

#1: 9 fish total in the aquarium.
#2: 8 fish that are colorful with interesting stripes and patterns. A nice variety is good here, too.
#3: 1 fish should be black to absorb negative energy.

What reef safe fish would you include to meet the above guidelines? The fish should be compatible to reflect a harmonious nature.

Thank you!

Orchid dottyback, Pseudochromis fridmani.
Sixline wrasse, Pseudocheilinus hexataenia.
Radiant wrasse, Halichoeres iridis.
Regal tang, Paracanthurus hepatus
Ocellaris clownfish, Amphiprion ocellaris
Foxface Rabbitfish, Siganus unimaculatus
Royal gramma, Gramma loreto
Emperor angel, Pomacanthus imperator

And for the all black fish, Centropyge nox or "Midnight pygmy angel".

You could, with aggressive water changes and such, keep these all in a 180 gallon tank conceivably. Maybe smaller if you ditched the big angel and got a smaller fish.

I have no idea, but will give you a big fat welcome to RDO.

BTW what size tank? Give a little more info. Size of tank will influence the suggestions. Type of corals planned for the tank will also make a difference.

:welcome:

I inadvertently had a Feng Shui tank myself. I didn't plan on it, but someone told me that the nine (or was it eight) fish and the black fish (in my case, a Black Tang) was perfect Feng Shui.

First thing that should be mentioned is that your tank has to be big enough to house all these fish. If it's less then 75 gallons, getting nine fish is simply not feasible unless you get very tiny fish. That said, if your tank is large enough, the nine fish shouldn't be a problem as there's a lot to pick from. It's the black fish that will probably be your limiting factor. Off the top of my head, there are black sailfin blennies, black tangs, and black pygmy angels (the one Matt mentioned). If your tank isn't big, I'd go with the pygmy angel or the sailfin blenny.

Does arranging the tank in this manner ensure a happy existance for the fish?

Only if the tank has proper "flow"

Sorry to burst the feng shui bubble of happiness going on, but it all really depends on the "Type" of feng shui your using. Taoist, Black Hat Sect, Form School or the more Western type using placement.

The only time I've seen "9" specificly used, was for a fish pond by the front door. Koi being the choice here, but not ones with a "red spot" on the head. I've seen an "odd" number of goldfish listed, bright orange and red. Or a single goldfish. But the true Feng Shui fish is the Arrowana, known as the "Wealth Fish".

I have mostly "yellow" fish in my tank, sitting in the "travel" section of the house> So I always have money to travel with!

There is an all black Gobiodon clown goby. Also an all black Pseudochromis, but I don't think it's available to buy. Other than those and the ones Len mentioned it's pretty limited.

Hello All,

Thank you very much for the responses and welcome to this forum. I don't follow feng shui too seriously, and take a 'can't hurt' approach to it. It appears that the single black fish in a feng shui reef tank is the fish one would take the most care in selecting.

You could probably get the whole feng shui dohicky tank with nothing but damsels and chromis.

Don't forget the size limitations (ie don't overcrowd your tank!) just to get your shui fenged though!

People that follow this movement first of all will tell you that a tank itself, placed correctly in the room is, in itself, "good feng shui" Nevermind the fish that are actually in it. I suggest you leave it at that.
Secondly, selecting fish based on these factors, and overcrowding a tank just so that you have 9 of them will lead to huge problems for you and your charges. You neglected to say how large your tank is, ( or will be) which means that nobody here can give you proper advice on the matter.
Thirdly, a reef or even fish only tank should be approached like a painting, with attention payed to composition, shape, negative space and color combinations. This is far more important to the "Feng Shui" of your environment. Think of warmth, with a cool accent fish, or vise versa. With priority of course given to compatiblity, both with each other and tank size, hardiness, maximum size etc. This will be far more effective than 8 fish selected willy nilly because of garish stripes or patterns and a single black fish.
You have no idea yet how complex fish selection is, your parameters in my opinion, will make long term success a most difficult proposition indeed. Pattern/color, size, compatibility, hardiness - all complicate matters endlessly.

All the same, good luck.

Hrm. I like the whole travel money thing. What then, creates a "travel" section?

:)

Hey Wade,
I'll do this the "Western" way, anyways here goes. Consider your house/apartment as a square. Going clockwise and facing the house from outside "Career" is center front of the house, the front left corner is "Knowledge & Self Cutivation", left side center is "Health & Family", far left corner is "Wealth & Prosperity", center back is "Fame & Reputation", far right corner is "Love & Marriage", right side center is "Creativity & Children", front right corner is "Helpful People & Travel" and they all go around the center which is "Earth".

For all-black, also don't forget about the black anglers (frogfish).

Peace,

Chip

Although I had one with a bunch of other fish - larger groupers, triggers and such.
Need a big tank for this.
