Hi guys.

Well, I've been thinking to start breeding my own fish, I know it's hard but I'm gonna try. I know there's some fish and invertebrates that are kind of "easy" to breed and some that are just impossible, can you tell me which ones are possible to breed.... I can think about:

Ocellaris Clown fish
Percula Clown fish
Cardinal fish
some nudibranches
some shrimps

what else?

Thanks.

It is not true saltwater fish, but molly (brackish water fish) is a piece of cake to breed.

Two books I would recommend:

For sure get the clownfishes one, it tells you everything you need to know about raising clowns. The dottyback one by Moe is a good read even if you don't want to breed fish.

and swordtails. I had all three in a 10 gallon and had to buy a frog for population control!

I will second the Orichid Dottyback. I haven't bred them yet myself, but they are one of the better projects to involve yourself with in this area. Being that they are a hardy, colorful, somewhat calm, and very desireable species.

Wow I just find Cardinalfish are easy too (mouthbreeders).

Anything else?

Yes, the Banggai cardinal are very easy to breed, the easiest of any saltwater fish. A great place to start if you are looking into breeding fish. I have raised them on starting on fresh hatched brine shrimp (easy) but I hear that they will take frozen cyclopeeze.

The hardest part is finding a pair. Don't believe any hoo ha about fin length for determining sex, just put three together, watch 'em like a hawk, and as soon as two pair up and exclude the third, net him out and put him in another tank.

Viola! Pair of Banggai. Then feed the potential parents well on meaty seafood, and they will breed.

Having raised both banggai cardinals and ocellaris clownfish, from just ease of raising them point of view the banggai cardinals are the easiest.

If you look at total effort per fish raised to maturity, then probably ocellaris clownfish may be the easiest just because you can raise 100+ per batch compared to 20 per batch on the banggais. Also catching a tile with eggs on it is easier than either a male banggai cardinal with a mouthful of eggs or the babies after they are released in a 415g reeftank.

My 2 cents.
