tank has been running for 9months got a 192 watt light last week had it on for 10 hrs a day abd i got a bad case of green algea, i was told buy the lfs to ruduce lighting to 6 hrs on the light and 8 for the blue light, my problem is removing the algea that is in the argonite, i guess the best way is to syphon it when i do water changes,i used a baster but that seemed to cover it up, any help is welcomed

Welcome to Reefs.org

There are a couple of things you can do.

make sure you are taking out more nutrients from the tank than you are putting in. In other words, filtering/skimming out more junk than you feed the tank.

And secondly, its normal to go through algae phases anytime you make a big change in your tank. If you just upgraded to a way more intense light then your tank will take a little time to balance back out.

In the future when changing lighting you should try to make it a gradual change if at all possible.

hope that helps a bit

Do you run a protien skimmer?

Do you have any snails?

Depending on what kind of algae it is, you can siphon it out, or if there is a whole lot of it, I have been known to rip it out by hand if it is in clumps.

thanx for replies i have a seaclone skimmer (hold the comments) and about 20 miss snails, when i put the baster to it it clumps up, so i will try that and remove the algea that way, another ? i have a pta and am wondering if that is enough light for him so far he seems to be doing fine, and when do you increase the lighting hrs?
