I think the general consensus is that Beckett-type skimmers are best for raw skimming power but often require more fiddling and, as you mentioned, require power hungry pressure-rated pumps to perform to their max potential.
When you're dealing with very large skimmers it seems the energy consumption thing becomes less of an issue as often multiple needlewheel pumps are used in those designs which can then consume as much energy as the comparable beckett setup.
On a tank your size, either one would be a solid choice, but the needlewheel may be a bit more energy efficient and somewhat easier to setup/use.
I've gone through several skimmers but had a much smaller tank before. I've decided on the MRC skimmer. It just appears that it will provide a better value product in the long run at a more affordable price when compared to Euro Reef.
I had a much less expensive needle wheel skimmer and after it fell apart was left with the feeling that it was not very durable. I used to run a downdraft skimmer and know what a headache used to be to adjust. My hope is the Beckitt will live up to its reputation. I think for the money (not considering the energy costs) MRC appear to have the products and services that are desired these days. At least I will know soon when the skimmer arrives.
