I've had this guy for about 6mos now... He seems happy.. nice expansion.. good color (despite the photo taken from the SIDE). I placed him up on a rock towards the top of the rockwork recently and noticed his byssal (if thats how you spell it) gland lowered to touch the rock. I think thats what it is. Take a look at the pic. There is a small frag of monitipora (spelling again) just under the clam that it is leaning on. WHat I am talking about is the thing I have circled. IS this ok? Should I do anything or just let the guy be?

Thanks for your help.

It's the foot. I'd reposition the clam so that the foot isn't dangling like that. Opportunistic predators can get into the clam via this opening. It looks to me like your clam is "feeling" what's beneath it and trying to lay down some byssal threads to anchor itself.

Thanks Len. I didn't think giant clams had such a pronounced foot. I'll reposition him up on a little flatter area.
