Tempered glass treated (heated???) or something so it is more resistant to cracking and when it does break it breaks into little cubes, not dangerous shards. It typically cannot be drilled.

Ever have your car window smashed? Then you have seen what tempered glass does when it breaks. Turns into little green cubes.

You do not want to drill tempered glass. I tried it on a tank that was so old we didn't know one way or the other. We carefully got the hole almost drilled, and then the whole side just shattered at once, answering the "I wonder if this is tempered" question! :D Big mess and ruined tank.

Often there will be a sticker on the bottom that says if the glass is tempered. Or you should call the manufacturer of the tank and ask.
