I've had good luck with a combination of Nassarius snails (which borrow into the sand) and Queen Conchs (which graze algae on the surface).

cleaner crews like turbos and other snails will help.

the best thing is to increase other plant life like macros to consume the nutrients instead of the algae on the sand.

Totally agree. I've got Nassarius, and conchs too. I also have to serpent stars that help a little too. :)
