In my sump the return from the tank, the pump to the skimmer and a return from a new refugium are all close together, on the other side of the sump the pump to the refugium, the skimmer outflow valve and the pump for the return to the tank are close together, does this matter, are the flow rates so high that it does not matter where the pumps and returns are relative to each other. thanks

i am not to sure about my answer, but if the return to the tank is too long it ( the pump) will lose pressure and volume. the shoter the hose the better it is for the pump. the retrn from the tank to the sump is basically gravity fed, and your flow will only be as much as your drop box is rated for. the return to the sump, from the tank really dosent matter. hopefully this helps you a little, and maybe someone else can add some more.
good luck

i guess what i am asking is idealy the return from the tank would get skimmed then the water goes through refugium then to tank, but in my case the water all kind of mixes in the sump, the return from the refugium mixes with outflow of sump, etc before being pumped back into the tank???

i think the biggest thing you should try to do is is to have your refugium water go back to the tank as directly as possible. if you skim the refugium water you will remove some of the good microlife from the refugium. other then that i dont think it matters a lot. how big is your tank, sump and refugium?

the tank is 75, the sump about 20 and the refugium about 3 or so, i have moved the pump to the refugium close to the outflow of the skimmer and will move the return from the refugium close to the return pump to the tank

sounds good. i dont think it matters much but it wont hurt to try to optimize it with your plan.
