Going to be moving across town and since my new tank won't be ready, I'll be transferring from the existing to tubs, then setting the old tank back up in the new house.

Luckily it's mostly FOWLR but there are some mushrooms and polyps, plus the growth on the LR (sponges feather dusters etc.). I'll be taking some water along for the tubs, but it going to be mostly new water once the tank is set back up.

In the past I've purchased a few pieces of LR from a fellow reefer, transferred in a pail to my place and then just stuck in my tank and everything seemed okay (mushrooms and feather dusters). Wondering if that was luck (or stupid) and should I be acclimatizing the LR?

You should be fine just plunking the rock in. Take care that the water in the new tank is the right temperature and salinity, and things like mushrooms, polyps, and small dusters will be just fine traveling with the rock without acclimation. The mushrooms might look unhappy for a few days, but they will recover.
