I am looking into upgrading my in tank circulation and these things look to be better then the old style power heads, but I have a vew questions.

1) Is the Tunze 6060 (6000l/h or 1600 gal/h) that much better then the Seio M1500 (also 6000l/h but only 1500 Gal/h ???) which is nearly half the price?

2) Can either of these be used with an electronic wave controller (on off cycling outlets)? Will it shorten the lifespan or are they built to handle it?

3) In my 36X18x24 65 gallon, would one of either of these be sufficient to stir the entire tank without dead spots or will I be better off with a pair of Seio 820's? (I also have about 400 GPH returning from the sump fuge)

4) If I go with a a pair of the 1500's will it be too much if they are not on an alternating timer? What I am getting at is, does the wider stream mean I need or can have more flow rate, or does it mean I actually should have less?

5) How are these things with microbubles? I have a pair of MP 1200's now and they will periodically blow out a stream of bubbles even though then are both submerged well below the surface.

Thanks,

1. Tunze are better built but it is like driving a BMW or a chevy. Both will get you from point a to b. One is just cooler.

2. The Seios are not recommended for timer uses. Neither is the 6060 tunze IIRC.

3. IMO either a pair of the M820 or a pair of M1100 would be better than a single M1500 or tunze. You could get the M1500 and keep the two MJ and thet would be good also.

4. I think a pair of 1500's would be doable, but probably over kill.

5. Micro bubles should not be a problem if they are deep enough.

1. Tunze is more energy efficient but saving 5-10 watts over a day isn't going to make terribly much difference

2. No on the Seios.

3. I'd put two in the tank, as said Seio 1100's are good, but they're surprisingly strong for anything near them.. you probably could get away with two 620 model seios. How many dead spots depends upon how much rock you have after that.

4.. ummm sure *shrug*

5. Microbubbles can only form if air gets there, if they're near the surface you potentially could have a vortex form to suck air in though

(I also have about 400 GPH returning from the sump fuge) - I have a Tunze Stream 1650gph in my 58 and it moves the water nicely. I personally should have gotten two on a wane controller.

4) If I go with a a pair of the 1500's will it be too much if they are not on an alternating timer? What I am getting at is, does the wider stream mean I need or can have more flow rate, or does it mean I actually should have less?

I had a Seio 800. It lasted 6 months. Locked up and will not come back on.

check RC for a DIY tunze thread. You can mod the Maxijets you have for under $20 and get more flow.

Thanks for the answers.

Wow the DIY is certainly intersting, especially since I have a spare mj-1200 and several spare impeller/magnet assemblies to try with. It does look like a lot of work and hard to get parts though.

The air coming out of the MJ's is definitly not from the surface, they are both well submerged with the intakes on the bottom and a sponge over the intake to keep things from getting sucked in and ground up.

Curious... does that DIY tunze bit actually give the flow that a tunze does? Or does it just give a diffuse flow like it but still at less than 300gph?

I forgot, look at the videos in the first post and you can get a good idea of the water movement, and that is an mj-600 in a 30gallon tank!
