two questions

1. the coral line algae that had grown while the tank was in my father's care has now begun to gain a green layer and color to it. why? and why has it not regrown?

2. HOW DO YOU REMOVE IT!?!?!?!??!?! i just spent an hour scraping and scraping and it is still really thick on the front glass.....

If the tank is empty a little viniger will help. If the tank has water in it and is glass a razor blade works well. As far as the green layer it could be a pest algae.

Yes there is. I have some in my tank. The way I read the question it is something else.

How long was the tank down before you restarted it?

You mean coraline algae can also be green ?

the tank was down for about eight hours (four/five weeks ago). however, while we tried to remove the ro unit from the house, "someone" removed the wrong side of a water line and well, bottom line is the tank wound up sitting in direct sunlight for what seemed an eternity. (everyone around at the time said about 45min, 1hr tops) needless to say the unit is still in the house.

the coral line algae was a great purple, and turned white straight away after i set up the tank. over the last two or three days it has begun to turn green. after changing six gallons of water tonight and scrapping for a long while, i can see it looks slightly different. i just returned home, the lights are off, but i can tell that it looks a slight shade lighter, and certainly thiner in some areas.

it is definatly not green coral line. i have seen some in a friend's reef. This did come clean easily in certain areas, and proved very difficult in others. i can see certain areas that should have been done better. next time....

i put this post up a few weeks after i moved my tank. in the months since i wrote it, the green algea growing on the glass is still green in some parts, still white in others, and still very difficult to get off in all parts. i have two itty bitty teeny tiny spots of purple just beginning to grow, however in the bottom of the side corners where it is hard to reach to clean, i now have really green, circular coral line algea growing. this is very easy to clean off the spots that i can reach. while i know it is not harmful, what causes this type of coraline algea to grow instead of purple?

how do i get the purple to begin growing without going crazy with calcium levels? right now the calcium level should be somewhere in mid to upper 300 range. i haven't tested the water in almost a month, but everything in the tank is happy healthy and eating!!

should i leave well enough alone since everyone is happy? i do really like the look of purple coraline algea....

I find that the coraline and corals seem to grow with cal at 400-450 and alk at 9-12dkh and mag at 12-1300 but thats what works for my tank either way if your parameters are within range and steady that coraline should come back
