dwarf golden red angelfish

Hello all,

I currently have a 22 hex reef set up with the above listed angel as the only fish inhabitant. He seems very happy and healthy, however, I was wondering if I should put a small peaceful tankmate or two in there with him for company. If anyone w/ experience with or knowledge of these fish could shed some light I would be much appreciated.

I don't think he needs any company. I bet he is perfectly happy as the lone fish and adding another fish is going to be tricky.

Many dwarf angels are pretty territorial, and in a 22 gallon tank you will have to look long and hard to find something that you could safely add to a tank that size with an established dwarf angel, I can't think of anything off hand that would be good to add.

Are we talking about C. aurantia?

If so, it really needs a tank bigger than 22 gallons. They are very shy, and need lots of hiding places and rockwork to feel comfortable. They aren't terribly aggressive either as dwarf angels go. Good luck with it. They are pretty tough to get eating. I've had 2 that have just refused any type of food. Makes me wonder if they were cyanide caught.

Yes, it is a C. aurantia. Based on your responses, I will leave him alone. He is well adjusted, the tank has many hiding places, and he is eating well ( frozen brine 2X day, and constantly grazing on all the little critters crawling around everywhere). I've thought about putting him in a 45 I've got lying around, but I don't want to upset the apple cart.

While I have read that they are a shy fish, this one relishes attention from me. Whenever I'm in the room, whether its feeding time or not, he's out at the front glass looking at me. Great little fish and absolutely gorgeous.

I would consider switching him over to frozen mysis shrimp or some other more nutritious food. Frozen brine is about as nutritious as popcorn, andd will not keep him going for very long. He should also be getting some type of herbivorous fare, like a bit of nori or broccoli clipped in the tank or spirulina or Formula Two flake if he will accept flake food.

Thanks for the heads up on the brine, Matt. I had no idea. I'm using a variety thats spirulina enriched. Would you please advise as to its merits.

I've tried Formula 2 as that's what I use in my main tank(120), but the little bugger won't touch it or anything but the brine. I'll try to switch him over to mysis, as well as my main tank (they'll eat anything).
