Hi gang. I’m finally getting ready to set up another tank after a three year absence from the hobby. What’s new? Anything big happen while I was gone?

The main thing I’ve noticed already is that a number of the vendors around are new, and some of the old ones are gone. Who’s good these days for mail order livestock, particularly high end SPS, aquacultured (not chop shop) frags, and oddities? Did the farming operations in the solomons ever get back up to speed, and is anyone carrying those these days?

Reef Aquarium volume III ever get released? Heh. Any good new books in the last couple of years? Think the last to hit the market before my absence was TMCRA vol IV.

Any aquarium company mass producing starfire glass tanks yet?

One of the things I have noticed in my two years on these boards, is that DSBs are less recommended now and bare bottom tanks are more in.

Hey, Charles.
I came back. :D
I'm three years older and just as grumpy.

Len: :!: right back at you :D

David: Good to see you. Jeebus, we go back how long now? Eight years? Damn, time flies.

Dan: Thanks for the links, it's appreciated. Is it me or did coral prices rise significantly since I've been gone?

Beasl: The sandbeds issue doesn't surprise me much. I was one of the early adopters back in '97, but I've run into a pair of sandbed "incidents" myself and was planning on going bare this time out. Although these faux beds look interesting....

 It's like the 7 year itch. I remember when everyone went nuts with BB around the introduction of the Berlin Method. Then, the BBers started scratching their heads, wondering why their tanks aren't denitrifying fast enough. Behold, the birth of DSB's. Since then, whenever something goes wrong, the trend goes full circle. I think the trick is knowing exactly where to point the finger.

I've remained a 'tweener with my shallow sand bed after all these years. But then again, I also refuse to rely on a skimmer.

Welcome back, cjdevito!

Wow CJ! Has it really been 3 years? Doesn't seem it.

:welcome:

Have fun setting up your new reef.

How big a tank are you setting up?

Tunze Streams with multicontroller are the latest rage in larger systems (say 6' long and larger)

'Fraid so - since I had a tank set up, at least. I continued working on Advanced Aquarist til September of 2003, but my last tank came down in april of 2002.

Size is tricky. I was intending to go with something on the small side, 20-40 gallons or thereabouts. But I just found out Clear for Life is now making an off-the-shelf tank in the dimensions I always wanted, 24x24x24 (60g), so now I'm thinking about maybe doing that.

Hey, you said "high-end"

I meant it, too :D

Wasn't really talking about the stuff in those links (which looks, on the whole, worth the cash) but the more general stuff. LPS which I remember as $20-30 corals (mail order/west coast vendors) now run around $40-50 from the same people, it looks like. The old solomons disk mounted "frags" (really, 3" colonies) would go for $35.... comparable size mounted mini-colonies (admittedly of different origin) I'm seeing priced in the $70-$90 range now.

Seriously. Or is it just where I'm looking?

 You haven't seen the Acanthastrea craze. What was once considered just a favia or brain, can now go for $100+, just for a few polyps.

Ludicrous
