Funniest thing you've heard at your LFS

1st lesson, day one at my store. Make something up, or pretend you know something you don't and you are fired. "I don't know" is always a valid answer, *once*.

It wasn't what someone told me to make money, but when I worked at a LFS someone had told me that they couldn't keep neon tetras because someone told them they were illegal.

I was like well why is that and they said that it was because if they ever got into the wild lakes they would demolish the food supply and starve natural trout and bass that lived there.

I've never laughed so hard =-)

I had a lady in front of me at a lfs with her kid, she was going to buy a ocellaris and a 5 gal. tank. Never asked for anything else, or about anything else (salt? test kits? food pref.? etc.)

Somtimes we CAN profit from LFS's ingorance.
My LFS has 2 tanks.. one with "Live Rock" one with "Base Rock" The live rock is $4.99/lb ( and doesn't look too bad). The BASE rock is only $2.99/lb. The rock in the tanks are THE SAME. My tank's LR is composed almost entirely of BASE rock from this store

i've seen my lfs 'throwaway bin' rocks climb in pricing over the years. when i started getting it from the "hidden goldmine" it was around $1.49/lb or even less sometimes (i'm a reg).

now it's up to $3.99/lb. :x

<sigh> it was good pickings for a while. especially, when someone took down a tank for xyz reason. show-sized pieces. i even gave away a couple of these (40# boulders i got for $2/lb., almost a cubic foot!), 'cause i was running outta room.

you just had to make sure nothing was leached into the rock (e.g. copper meds from FOWLR). cure it for a couple months and voila! LR! :wink:

Me: "How big is the tank?"

Customer: "Oh, about like this..<hand motions of about a 3-5 gallon tank>"

Me: "Oh my. When was this tank setup and cycled?"

Customer: "Um...yesterday."

I had an LFS owner try to convince me that live rock will not provide any biological filtration and that in order to have a successful reef tank you needed a wet/dry or fluidized bed filter. When I told him many people (including myself) run reef tanks for years without any other filtration - just rock and a skimmer, he just frowned at me and said "no way, that won't work"...

...that was my first and last trip to the store... :lol:

Sorry - I dont know where that came from. This forum is ticking me off. LFS get away with a lot of stuff. Im glad I know better now.
