Siphon it out slowly, about one third of the sand bed or less at a time, depending on what fits best with your usual water change regimen.

Some have recommended I use a wet/dry vacuum, but I'm taking down a tank so it's a somewhat different situation. Siphoning would probably be best if you plan on keeping your tank running.

If you are not planning on taking down the tank syphon what you can during a normal water change. Take from the bottom of the sand bed and work from the same area. I remove most of my sand bed from my 110 this was and did it without incadent. Try not to stur it up more than necessary.

I'm in the process of reducing my SB depth as well (no fad, just personal preference for aesthetics). I agree with siphoning some out with each water change. Done carefully, you get little suspended sediment, and after a couple months, providing you do regular w/c's, you should have the desired result. Shallow sand beds are nothing new, and dsb's aren't for everyone. As with most aspects of the hobby, there are different ways to accomplish the same thing.

I siphoned my sandbed out in sections using a large diameter clear PVC plastic hose. I did it over the course of about a month and one half. My hair algae is now completely gone.
