Powerheads...

Ok.. on my 55g, I've got a sump return, and a skimmer return, but would really like to move more water around. I saw something in the LFS that a nozzle was moving around, almost like a wavemaker, but alternating the current.

Does anyone have a suggestion for something like this? Should it be close to the bottom of the tank? ...positioning is helpful too. Brand names...please, and your success rates.

I have a thin layer of very fine live sand on the bottom too, just to give you more info.

I bought one of them Hydor Flo's and really like it so far. It puts out a wide spread of circulating flow and is cheap.

I think the thing you are referring to is a seaswirl. If you want to know about these, ask len, he has one.

Not Seaswirls. I've seen these little HydorFlo things in action. Even if they do crap out after 6 months, they're so cheap it's almost worth buying a new one.

Yeah I think they are very nice. I wish they were a little smaller, but they work great so far.

Ive seen people mention elswhere that they have been running them for 4 or 5 months without cleaning them and still have no problems.

I have two fo these one locked up after two weeks no fish at all, I took it out putting it open and fixed it in about 25 seconds, I think these are the best investment for the cost they would well on the maxi jets I have (900 and 1200)

about 5 inches diamater about 2 and ahlf inches long, its really quite compact and it will disturb the top of the water from the bottom of my tank, not like little ripples but good amount of force is hitting the surface (maxi jet 1200)

A very good value. A bit of an eyesore, but you can't beat what it does for $13.

I think they can be plumbed into a small closed loop if you want to hide the pump...

Hmm, well it must to some degree. I don't know how much though.

I didn't do a scientific test or anything but I didnt feel the amount of flow lost was very noticable at all.

the two I have I modifyed and shaved the spinning fins to cut down any waste of power at all, it seemed to help the 1200 but the 900 didnt feel any loss at all
