Hi,

I have a friend who has a lot of old (dead) live rock. He's had it in his garage for about 10 years........ bone dry.

I am just wondering what is a good method of reseeding this rock?

Also how long do you think it would take to re-seed?

Cheers,
Vic [veng68]

I would just add it to a tank with good liverock and it will reseed over time.

I'm not sure how long it would take though. I pretty sure it would be exactly as good as the old rock in a years time. But that is just a guess.

Depends on the size of the tank/amound of dead rock. For instance, adding 5lbs. of good quality live rock to seed a 20gal. tank would be a lot more responsive than say, if you were to add just 5lbs. to a 120gal. tank. There's no guideline for this situation, but just use common sence in how much live rock to add to the system. Never hurts to have too much live rock... as much as he's comfy spending.

Never hurts to mix it up, either. If he's purchasing the live rock online, he may be stuck to choosing bulk from one location in the world to get the rock from. But ideally, if he could get a couple pieces from different locations(possibly from a LFS), that in theory, boosts biodiversity. Not crucial, but just a thought.

Mine is starting to look good after 6 months. It was dead and dry as well. when I started. It took a while to get started, but now it is getting coraline covered and full of critters.
