I`ve been buying turbo`s over the last couple of months but most seem to just drop off the rocks or glass and die. All other livestock is fine and my water quality is excellent. I`ve just learned that some turbos are prone to dying because they cant self right, is this true and if so what type of turbos do i need to buy and how do you tell them apart.

I have to go to work soon so I'll make this kind of brief.
The classification of snails can be quite daunting to most people and there's is usually confusion by collectors and stores over what is being sold and the common names given to the critters.
We're probably talking about the Family Turbinidae of which contains the subfamily Turbiniae of which contains 8 species that are commonly called the Turbo Snail. Also in the Family Turbinidae is a genus called Astraea of which contains some of the species that commonly can not right themselves after falling or being turned over by current or other critters.
To add confusion to all this is that some of these algae consuming snails that are collected are from colder water than our reef tanks so they slowly cook to death in our tanks.
Most snail species are very sensitive to changes in salinity and must slowly be drip acclimated to our tanks over the period of up to 8 hours not just plopped in.
So there are many reasons why your snails are dying.
How are you acclimating them?
Can you get a picture of the ones you have?

David Mohr
