I have a Torch Euphyllia coral I added about 2 weeks ago. This is only my 2nd coral since beginning the tank. It has been expanding nicely during the day & taking frozen Cyclopeeze every other day or so. This morning when I got up I checked the tank & found the torch had extended the 1st sweeper tentacle I've seen since I brought it home.
I understand Euphyllia are 'aggressive' corals & have made sure its out of reach of anything else. The closest sessile invert to it is a Rhodactis mushroom rock, about 10 inches away. About 24 inches away is a small Favia (maybe favites, never really got a confirmation), which I understand is also aggressive, but have never seen a sweeper from it (even at night) in the 6 months I've had it.
My question is, what is the extension of sweepers really telling me? Do corals extend these because they have 'sensed' the presence of something they don't like, or will they send them out just as a matter of course, whether or not they're feeling encroached upon?
